How CT Angiography Works
Computed tomography angiography (CTA) uses an injection of contrast material into your blood vessels and CT scanning to help diagnose and evaluate blood vessel disease or related conditions, such as aneurysms or blockages.CTA is typically performed in a radiology department or an outpatient imaging center.
Preparation
A contrast dye, usually iodine-based, is injected into a vein, usually in the arm, prior to the procedure. On the scan, this dye makes blood vessels more visible.
Scanning
A motorized table slides through the CT scanner while the patient is lying on it. The scanner produces X-rays and takes several cross-sectional pictures of the area of interest.
Processing
A computer processes these photos to produce intricate three-dimensional pictures of blood veins, which aid medical professionals in spotting anomalies.
